Barr Campaign Hits Minneapolis!

September 2nd, 2008 by Russ Verney

Over the holiday weekend, staffers from the Barr Campaign arrived in Minneapolis for the RNC Convention and other events.

Given that the nation’s media has congregated on the banks of the Mississippi for the Republican National Convention, we thought it would be a great opportunity to rally supporters and gain even more media exposure.

Yesterday, Bob hit the ground running, speaking at an event in the afternoon sponsored by Minnesotans for Limited Government and again at a campaign rally organized by the Minnesota Libertarian Party.

This morning, Bob met with supporters and will be making an appearance at the Rally for the Republic followed by a good lineup of interviews.

So far today, our candidate is scheduled to appear at 4:15 eastern on Lou Dobb’s radio show and at 9:00 p.m. eastern, he’ll appear on Your World with Neil Cavuto
on Fox News for a convention wrap-up.

Over the next few days as he makes the media rounds, Bob is going to be making his way in and out of the Xcel Energy Center where the RNC Convention is taking place.

In the meantime, back at Barr HQ in Atlanta, we’re busy as can be with our ongoing ballot access battles.

We expect to hear the resolution of our ballot access case in West Virginia sometime today.  The hearing for our Pennsylvania case (where an agent of John McCain is attempting to kick us off of the ballot) is scheduled for this Friday.

Meanwhile, in Texas . . .

Late last week we informed our supporters of the issue in Texas where it is clear that both John McCain and Barack Obama missed their filing deadlines to appear on the Texas ballot.

Deputy Campaign Manager Shane Cory had a pleasant conversation with the head of the Texas Elections Division last week, and was told that the Texas Republican and Democrat parties filed “something,” but had not necessarily completed the certification by the deadline.  He requested and was told that he would receive a copy of the “something,” but as of yet, we have not received any documents.

This morning, the Libertarian Party of Texas stepped in to help out and sent a staffer to the Elections Division to obtain the paperwork that was supposedly filed on behalf of McCain and Obama.

We’ve been told that Elections Division’s General Counsel will review whether or not the public filings can be released to the public.

If and when the paperwork is released, we’ll release it to you but do note that at least according to the Texas Secretary of State’s Web site that was updated over the weekend, Senators John McCain and Barack Obama are now on the ballot in Texas.

I guess the saying is true: Membership has its privileges . . . if you’re Republican or a Democrat.

But I would like to put that statement to the test.

Over the holiday weekend, we got our ducks in a row to move forward and take a stand in Texas.

I realize that many of you are interested in exactly what we’re doing with this matter, and while I cannot go into specifics at the moment, I’ll do my best to keep you informed along the way over the next few days.

While we’re taking care of business on our end, I do need a few things from you.

The media has nearly completely ignored this story. I need you to write and call your local stations and papers to explain what’s going on - especially if you live in Texas.

To be fully armed with the facts, read Shane Cory’s update here, or click over to Ballot Access News for in-depth information.

Also, any action we pursue is going to be expensive.  Please take a minute to chip in $5 or more for this effort.

I appreciate all of your support and will provide another update as soon as the news comes in.

    Gentlemen:

    1. If sanctioned from the debates, will Bob Barr video tape responses to all debate questions asked and brief closing statement and make this available on his website, youtube, and others?

    2. Will Bob Barr embrace electronic voting with the stipulation that voters be allowed to receive a voting tally before and after they vote? Each voter can be given a random generated number which can be checked on the final printout that is made public within 24 hours of poll closings.

  2. Caleb Says:

i hope that they find out that the republicans and democrats violated the law that would give a big boost to us

I just saw that McCain is angry that CNN grilled one of his surrogates on Palin’s qualifications last night and just canceled out on Larry King live for tonight. Any chance of Bob replacing him>

  4. Robert Simon Says:

At first I was excited about Sarah Palin…now,I’m getting a little disappointed…She may be just another Big Government character….:(

It’s great that the Barr campaign is finally recognizing that the Paul supporters are a rich vain to be tapped. People need to go to the Campaign for Liberty blog and start talking up the Barr campaign because there is a lot of hostility toward Bob over there. Pointing out that Bob introduced the motion inviting Paul to seek the LP nomination and the fact that Barr is actually on the ballot in Paul’s home state would be good talking points IMHO.

  6. Randy Speeg Says:

How about you get Bob onto Larry King live via satellite from Minneapolis?

  7. Buckeye Kned Says:

Brandon. What’s up with the hostility? Barr is the guy on the ballot– is that eating at some people. Ron Paul took his chance with the GOP and it is over– for now.

  8. David Says:

Bob Barr is the ONLY candidate that will stand up to the illegal immigration issue and not coddle these criminals. I am an independant sick to death of my hard earned taxes going for huge government, housing and medical care for these illegal aliens. Enough!! Go get both major parties Bob.

  9. Cedric Says:

People trusted Ron Paul for a reason. People trusted Ron Paul when they would never trust any other politician in a million years. After Ron Paul dropped out, Bob Barr became my instant choice for November… some Paul supporters just aren’t as easy to win over?!?!

  10. Steve in NJ Says:

Why should Ron Paul supporters be miffed at Bob Barr if Ron Paul is not running for Prez anymore? They should be JOINING Bob Barr to unify the Libertarians. What an opportunity !!! What is goofed up here?

  11. Brandon Magoon Says:

The reason for the hostility is a lot of them think Bob is a neo-con.It’s not true of course but that’s the perception. I see the same thing in my Ron Paul meetup groups. I can’t really do anything with these people. That’s why I think pointing out that Barr invited Paul to seek our nomination and that Barr is the candidate Paul will be voting for are important talking points with Paul supporters.

Just got back in from being out of town for the past 5 days, and I have to say that I am VERY, very happy to see this posting from Russ.

This is the kind of initiative that is needed, and I applaud Russ on the concentration in Minneapolis with outreach to both conventions.

Things can be done overtly and subtly, not the least of which is outreach.

I know I harped on this topic alot, but for very good reason, and it is wonderful to see that my hopes in this area are well-founded!

  15. EG Says:

Until the Texas fiasco, I thought the system was still democratic, just not favorable to third parties. Unfortunately, this overt violation of election law proves that we really live in a “duopoly”, with only two parties sanctioned by the state. That’s one more than North Korea.

This news sounds like something coming out of Zimbabwe, but it’s coming out of MY republic. Worse than that, the media is doing what it can to ignore the story. Let’s hold them to account! Call stations, sponsors and ask them why they are ignoring vote fraud in Texas.

Now I’m off to contact Secretary Andrade’s office and remind them about that constitution thingy he swore to uphold…

KSL 1160 AM (Salt Lake City, Utah) is teasing that Bob Barr will be interviewed with the hour (9:30-10:30 a.m. Mountain Time).

“The Doug Wright Show” is broadcasting from RNC’s Radio Row in St. Paul, MN.

    The interview may be archived.

    Debate update:

Another poster put the phone number for the Commission on Presidential Debates, just called it and the lady directed me to the web site. I asked her about how to get Bob on the debate stage and she stated that the best way to do so would be to do exactly what I’m doing… calling the office. Supposedly, she was recording the conversation and would ‘forward it’ to her superiors. That may or may not be true, but it sure cant hurt to call. The line was busy the first couple of times that I called, but on the 3rd try, I got through to an actual person, not an automated system.

I suggest we flood that phone number with as many callers as we can muster. Even if there is no ‘recorded message’ to send to superiors…. the volume of calls for Bob should speak for itself.

    The number is (202) 872-1020
